Kava is a depressant drug, originating from the South Pacific. The roots of the plant Piper methysticum are usually crushed, ground or powdered to be used as a supplement or extract. Kava has an anti-anxiolytic effect, with effects described as reflective and calming.  Historically, use of kava in the Pacific Islands was restricted to ceremonial occasions, but recreational use increased significantly in the 20th century.
